WPC Energy Appoints First Female Director General (CEO) in 91 Years

WPC Energy, the World Forum for Energy Transformation, has announced Burcu Canci Gunal as its new Director General (CEO), effective January 1, 2025.

With 28 years of experience at Turkish Petroleum, Burcu has served as Managing Director of the Carbon Management Department, focusing on energy efficiency, GHG emissions, carbon markets, and renewable energy. She has also held various leadership roles within the company, including Deputy Managing Director of Strategy and Head of Corporate Communications.

Burcu has been involved with WPC Energy for over 17 years, founding the WPC Energy Mentoring Program and serving on the Executive Committee since 2014. She will succeed Dr. Pierce Riemer, who will retire in March 2025 and assist with the transition.

“I am honored to take on this role,” said Burcu. “I look forward to collaborating with our global partners to drive innovation and promote diversity in our workforce.”

Pedro Miras, President of WPC Energy, expressed excitement about Burcu’s appointment, praising her clear vision and extensive experience as key assets in navigating the evolving energy landscape.
